Let’s break down some great quotes from the world of the greatest sport on earth.
In honor of the preseason heating up, I wanted to share 3 of the greatest quotes from NFL coaches. Coaches have the incredible ability to produce the best from us. It’s a big reason I want both of my children to participate in team sports. I want them to be held accountable not just at home, but outside of it as well.
The great thing about Medium, books, etc. is that you can hold yourself accountable by using the knowledge you gather from some of the greatest minds in the world. And NFL coaches don’t get to their lofty perches by being simple minds.
“If you want to win, do the ordinary things better than anyone else does them day in and day out.” — Chuck Noll, Pittsburgh Steelers
Consistency. I’m convinced it’s the most important ingredient in the success stew. Small (but great) habits repeated every single day, especially when you don’t feel like it, add up over time. I won’t be playing in an NFL game, ever, but I do seek incremental personal improvement daily. Strive to be the best version of you. Perfection isn’t attainable, but consistent improvement sure is.
“Life is 10 percent what happens to you and 90 percent how you respond to it.” — Lou Holtz, New York Jets
You cannot control what happens to you in most cases. All you can control is yourself and your response. Notice no one says reaction here. Response is thoughtful, reaction is impulsive. Train your mind for resilience so that when shit hits the fan (and it will) you’re ready to respond in a way that’s useful to you and those around you.
“Self-praise is for losers. Be a winner. Stand for something. Always have class, and be humble.” — John Madden, Oakland Raiders
Let others praise you, you just keep working hard. Humbleness comes from realizing that success doesn’t matter without class. How you treat others, how you respond to situations and how you conduct yourself in life is what really matters. All the success in the world means little without any strong relationships to show for it. Make sure people care about you.
Hope these quotes resonated with you. Pop back tomorrow for my “Books & Booze: 8/15/21” article where I suggest 2 books and 2 beers.
